8. Flexibility
Consultants generally work with different companies. They should be able to adapt to different work cultures and personality traits of different clients and their employees with whom they interact. They should not be adamant on setting their own rigid rules of engagement, without any scope of flexibility.
They may need to travel to various locations, meet different people and they have to be able to adjust to any situation. Every place and every situation may not be as per their expectations or preferences. They must be able to work in exceptional situations, if need arises.
Sometimes, a consultant has to rework an idea presented by her to the client, because the client did not accept it due to their genuine concerns. The consultant must be able to take such situations in her stride and should either convincingly persuade the client to accept the solution or work on modifying it till it is accepted.
9. Good Communication Skills
Communication skill is vital in any activity. Consulting is no exception.
A consultant needs to communicate with different people at the client’s business. All people have different attitudes, habits and peculiarities. In order to work comfortably with all and get them positively enrolled into an initiative, he should have very strong interpersonal skills, a part of which requires excellent communication skills.
Also, a consultant is paid for insights and ideas. He must have skills to articulate these ideas such that the client and his team can get them correctly.
Regular follow up and updating of the developments is another crucial requirement for successful completion of any assignment.
Sometimes, a consultant has to help the company in drafting some documents, policies, manuals or other type of communication.
For all these to go well, ensure that the consultant has good written and spoken communication skills.
10. Tech-friendliness
Today’s business world is highly impacted by technology. We can’t excel much in any business, if we don’t understand or make use of the available technology suitable to our business.
Our consultants also must be familiar with the common technology tools for communication, collaboration, follow-up and data management.
If one cannot mold his old-fashioned ways of thinking and working as per the new age and can’t use technology, how can he guide a business to use it?
Technical illiteracy is a handicap in today’s business world. Ensure that you are not engaging with consultants with such a limitation.
